Challenge #1:
The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

I'm svgurl. I'm in my 30s, and have been actively part of fandom on and off since 2007, when I created my LJ. The SV part of my username stands for Smallville, which was my original fandom and I was very mono fandom for years.

My profile is up to date and gives a little background history and the fandoms/ships I'm interested in. I'm focused on 9-1-1/Buddie these days, but I still love MCU, Smallville, Gilmore Girls, and past favorites do come up from time to time.

I can be found on various places:
AO3: [archiveofourown.org profile] svgurl410
Tumblr: [tumblr.com profile] svgurl410
Discord: svgurl

I mod:
[community profile] comment_bingo: a bingo challenge that promotes commenting on other fanworks using the provided prompts
[community profile] rarefemslashexchange: a rare f/f fandom exchange that runs once a year

This is my 5th year participating in the Snowflake Challenge and I really love the way it gives everyone a chance to interact with people that you normally wouldn't. I am not comfortable with just going to someone's journal and talk to them out of the blue, so it's nice that this gives you a chance to do just that. I am looking forward to doing more of that and meet more people on here as well! :)

6. In 1709 The Great Frost began during the night, a sudden cold snap that remains Europe's coldest ever winter. What temperature will it reach today where you live?

I wouldn't do well with a cold snap. I'm still wearing short sleeves and flip-flops. The temperature today was 65° F. But we have five days coming up with rain and mid-fifties. That's winter for us. Then it pops to mid 60s. I don't like the rain and the cold. No flip-flops tomorrow. Brrrrr. We need the rain, so I can't complain. (I just did) 😂😂 I'm in Arizona, by the way.

Has anyone seen the movie Rental Family, with Brendan Fraser? It's not streaming until the end of February. No one wants to go with me. (I can't drive) My hubby will go if I talk him into it.

"Maybe, in that last fleeting moment, you might just realize you treasure your individuality."
I used the tag 'ambiguous ending' because I don't know where canon will take us from here, but oh man, does this video (rightfully) feel like resisting and continuing to exist as yourself against overwhelming odds and pressure is its own triumph. My heart ached, my heart soared.

The editing choices are superb, focusing on the later episodes but deploying moments from the earlier ones to subtle but devastating effect to support the vid's thesis and to bring home the weight of everything that drove us to the finale. The combination of the music choice and the way Manousos and Carol's journeys up until now are portrayed—their losses, their struggles, their stubborn perseverance—gives me a new appreciation for everything that makes them them, and leaves me feeling incredibly tender toward these two Difficult (read: human) People.

5. Are you looking forward to any TV shows this year?

I'm not aware of any new shows coming out. I look forward to the shows I watched last year. I also hear Rental Family with Brendan Fraser will be released on Hulu and Disney in late February. I'm going to try to be patient.

I don't watch too many newer shows. This is a list of my favorites.

Dear Jim and Blair,

It has been 28 years since I first discovered fanfic for the Sentinel. No one had to drag me; I jumped in willingly. You both kept me company on nights I couldn't sleep. You made me laugh, made me angry, and made me fall in love with you all over again. Looking back, I wouldn't change a thing. You'll always be my favorites, even when I play in other people's sandboxes. Looking forward to many more years of writing about you.

Love,

For those who are wondering why the Multifandom Multimedia Microbang is called "Be A Goldfish," here's the explanation from the comm's Admin [personal profile] devinwolfi:

When we started this event earlier this year, it was a Ted Lasso fandom exclusive event. We always had every intention to go multifandom later, this just gave us the opportunity to beta test it on a smaller group. In that series, a recurring line is to "be a goldfish," (based on the now disproved idea that goldfish have 3-10 second memories), meaning to let go of past hurts, move on, brave the new day, and try new things, all of which we hope to embody and encourage throughout this event. We've found that smaller works and folks who leave comments tend to get less attention, but those small works and comments are by no means less important to the fandom ecosystem so we wanted to give them, and the fans who share them, the support and attention they deserve. We also know that it's very easy to get bogged down by expectation, past experiences, and the pressure of trying to be "successful" in fandom and be paralyzed by it all to the point of inaction. We want to give people the space to try new things and develop new fannish skills without feeling like they have to commit to big projects.

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

We are kind of in between pets at the moment. Both of my cats have somewhat recently passed. Romeo in 2021 at the age of 15 and Kamikaze in 2023 at 16 1/2. We do plan on getting more cats, it just hasn't worked out yet.

Now, I said kind of because there is the matter of Tuxedo. Going on 6 years ago, a next door neighbor moved away and left his kitten behind. This was very much a kitten and not a full grown cat. The reasons the cat was left behind are unclear, as there are too many versions of the story, but what we know for sure is that while the old man who owned the cat was in the hospital, whoever was caring for it did something to it and it has been terrified of people, including those it used to be fine with, and will not come indoors. He has never left the neighborhood and has survived all this time. Not knowing his original name, my mother and I have always called him Tuxedo. We have sense learned that his name was Quiz.

In the first 2 years, my mother and I both spent quite a lot of time trying to trap him to surrender him to the local animal shelter with no success. He is crafty. The local neighborhood children speak of him like a local cryptid. Everyone in the neighborhood has tried to capture him at one point or another. Eventually, we gave up. All it did was encourage Tuxedo to spend more time in our front yard which royally upset our inside cats.

But in April of 2024, my mother came to a realization; we have no longer have cats. She thus began her campaign to convince Tuxedo to live with us.

After 20ish months, there have been mixed results. He appears for food 1 to 5 times a day. He now shows up everyday fairly consistently, whereas before it wouldn't be uncommon for him to disappear for up to 3 weeks at a time. When the weather is nice, he will spend the vast majority of his time either in our yard or side garden, though he still "checks his trap line," as Mom puts it. During bad weather, he holds up in our garage. (He has several nice beds and boxes in the yard and the garage.) He understands the various things we call him as names that are in reference to him. He understands the words Mom uses for food time as meaning food time. While, he still run from the sight of me, he also seems to understand that when I say, "no stop" he doesn't need to leave the garage and "I'll get the old lady" means he's going to get fed. I feed him too, just not nearly as often. He also actually ran to my mother when she called him for lunch time the other day. We've never seen him run in his life.

He has also learned to get my mother's attention by staring at her through the screen door window, if the front door is open. He's done it exactly twice.

All that said. He is very much still his own cat. No one can approach him without him freaking out. He hisses at my mother when she puts food down for him. And after accidentally getting locked in the garage for an hour one morning, he wouldn't go in it for 2 weeks. (He did still expect food, just brought to his general vicinity outside. )

Though with the Christmas tree and several boxes of holiday decor down, he seems to have decided to winter in the newly free space in our attic loft.

Is he our cat? No. But we feed him and sometimes he kind of lives here.

I was also going to write a bit about our muder of crows and my 12 virtual pets on Subeta, but this got kind of long. I will add more upon request.
